SHRM Introduces Electronic Books The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has jumped into the electronic book—or e-book— market, rolling out its first five titles in fall 2009, according to Christopher A. Anzalone, manager of book publishing for SHRM. “The e-book is the upcoming trend in how to read books. It may not replace the physical version of the book anytime soon, but it’s another option for those people who don’t want to lug all those books around.

Enforcement of Red Flags Rule on Identity Theft Begins Nov. 1 On Nov. 1, 2009, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) began enforcing the Red Flags Rule requiring financial institutions and creditors with covered accounts to implement a written identity theft prevention program that identifies the company’s red flags—patterns, practices and activities that indicate the possible existence of identity theft in connection with its covered accounts—as well as how it will detect identity theft and respond appropriately.

To Catch a Data Thief
Unfortunately, theft of electronic devices is becoming as common as swiping Post-it notepads. More than 60 percent of U.S. workers who left their employers in 2008 took some data with them, according to a Feb. 24 article in The Economist. Catching a thief can be difficult when stolen information is downloaded on tiny iPods or flash drives. And yet, finding culprits is imperative, as stolen data often includes proprietary or private information or trade secrets.
Be Clear on Cloud Computing Contracts Cloud computing, particularly the subset known as software-as-a-service (SaaS), has made life easier in multiple ways for Karen Sones, senior vice president and human resources strategic project director for First Horizon National Bank in Memphis, Tenn.
